CARAVAGGIO'S CONVERSION OF SAUL - A CENSORED MASTERPIECE FROM THE ODESCALCHI PRIVATE COLLECTION
November 29, 2022
"The conversion of Saul" is one of the rare privately owned paintings by Caravaggio, an extraordinary masterpiece, sought after by Museums and exhibitions from all over the world.
The Conversion of Saint Paul, has been identified as the first version of a commission placed by in 1600 by Msgr. Tiberio Cerasi to adorn his own chapel, and then replaced with the painting currently in S. Maria del Popolo, as this first version was originally rejected by the patron because the original iconography of the artist did not respect the words of the Acts of the Apostles.
This masterpiece is an extraordinary effort of shadows and penumbra, of lights suffocated by clouds and an illuminated area: the bare chest and the arms of Saul covering his face, as the sword lays on the ground by his side.
A very limited number of guests are permitted to join. Participation requests will be acknowledged on a first served basis.
